Benjamin M. Statler College of Engineering and Mineral Resources

Industrial Engineering, BSIE

Industrial and management systems engineers focus on improving performance for an entire system — productivity, quality, cost, safety, sustainability, employee health and market enhancement. They can be found in manufacturing, healthcare, logistics and distribution, retail environments, government agencies, financial institutions and virtually any product or service that has complex processes.

Industrial engineers balance inputs to achieve the greatest good for the organization and society — the right combination of human resources, natural resources and man-made structures and equipment. Professionals in this field bridge the gap between management and operations, motivating people in addition to determining what equipment, information, etc., should be used and how.

Learn by Doing

Learning happens outside the classroom. Get involved.

Students are encouraged to conduct research with Industrial Engineering faculty and in research facilities. Projects have included:

  • Designing ergonomic assists for the development of a novel in-vivo PET-scan helmet to model brain function
  • Modeling the energy efficiency of dryer systems for compressed air
  • Modeling health systems, perioperative information and processes from the vantage of a complex supply chain network
  • Using myoelectric muscle stimulation to determine acceptable lifting loads for lower back and shoulder movements
  • The interaction of the Microsoft Holo Lens for VR immersion in a smart manufacturing environment

Before graduating, all undergraduates in this major complete an academic project (or "capstone") to demonstrate their research, communication and critical thinking skills.

IENG 471 requires every graduating senior to participate in some type of summer internship or semester co-op experience.

  • Energy assessment for the City of Morgantown.
  • Quality control and root cause analysis of flour loss at a commercial bakery.
  • Study of allowable loads permissible on muscle groups associated with shoulder movements.
